Recent Work
Inspiration for this continuing body of work came from looking at Alexander Calder lithographs in addition to constantly reviewing my collection of Inuit art books. At first I made a series of charcoal drawings. Using some of the ideas from them I started using color. Primary colors seem to have an absolute vibrancy, conveying an elementary sensibility that seems to so easy to ally with simplistic forms. Some of the below are gouache and charcoal.
Recurring themes are transformation and mother and child. The suite of Packing Doll paintings are based on Inuit packing dolls which at one time were used to buffer Inuit sculptures while in transport. So interesting that they are always in an animal mother/child theme. Read more about Inuit stories and legends here.
