Seeing Black

After looking at Kerry James Marshall’s work I decided it would  make an interesting contrast to replace the faces of my Inuit figures with my interpertation of Marshall’s self-portrait. Using black gesso with white pencil, the faces provide a great contrast to the swirling colors and diverse forms.

Hunters

The Hunters series was inspired by Jamasie Teevee's 1975 drawing called Hunters. The simplicity , the flatness and black and white patterns seemed beguiling and I proceeded, in 2011, to make 14 two-piece hunters using a wide range of extreme color, texture and patterning. Each piece of paper is 20" x 16", and a single hunter is 40" x 16".

In 2017 the series became transformed with gender fluid faces based on James Kerry Marshall's self portrait. I modified the lower body to match each individual’s Inuktitut syllabics, all of which spell out 'Hunter'. They are blended into the background or the hunter's suit. It is quite fun to mix and match them.
